Attackers use automated language modules (MLMs) such as ChatGPT to craft phishing emails, ransom notes, and other content designed to pressure victims. They then sell these as toolkits, which can be used in other attacks. "We are seeing a shift in ransomware from code to content. It's not just malware, but narratives, campaigns, and pressure scripts sold as plug-and-play," said Anirudh Agarwal, CEO of OutreachX. Crypto continues to play a central role in ransomware attacks and remains the preferred payment method for attackers. However, according to a Chainalysis report, despite an increase in the number of victims, total ransom payments declined by 35% in 2024. Improved investigative practices, asset seizures, and on-chain sanctions helped reduce ransom proceeds, particularly in the second half of 2024. Furthermore, restrictions on many Russian crypto platforms significantly reduced attackers' ability to launder funds.
