U.S. Supreme Court to consider expanding presidential power to fire independent agency officials

最新报道：According to a report from Bijie.com, the U.S. Supreme Court hinted on Monday that it would consider expanding the president's power to shape independent agencies by overturning nearly a century-old precedent. The Supreme Court agreed to hear the case of Rebecca Slaughter, a Democratic commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission before she was fired by Trump. She was reinstated by a lower court under a 90-year-old ruling known as the Humphrey Execution case. At that time, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that commissioners, as independent regulatory agencies, could only be removed for misconduct or malfeasance. Gwen Wilcox of the National Labor Relations Board and Kathy Harris of the Civil Service Protection Board also requested that if the Supreme Court hears Slaughter's case, their cases be heard as well. The Supreme Court has allowed the president to temporarily fire the three commissioners mentioned above, but it also hinted that the power of dismissal may be limited at the Federal Reserve, which is expected to be tested by the dismissal of former Federal Reserve Governor Tim Cook.
