Federal Reserve's Shrinking Balance Sheet Drives Mortgage Rate Slide

最新报道：U.S. 30-year fixed mortgage rate fell to 6.484% on Sept. 4, 2025, down 7 basis points from the previous week and 11 basis points from the prior month, reaching multi-month lows amid expectations of a potential Fed rate cut in early October. Jumbo and FHA rates also declined to 6.678% and 6.249%, respectively. The Fed’s shrinking balance sheet, reduced by $2.36 trillion since April 2022, and lower MBS holdings due to declining refinancing and home sales, contributed to the downward trend.
