The Ethereum Layer 2 protocol enabled users to restake assets like stETH via liquid restaking tokens (LRTs) to enhance liquidity and yield. Despite launching 15+ LRTs, integrating with 60+ DeFi protocols, and undergoing 8+ audits, the team cited unsustainable economics due to insufficient liquid rewards in shared security. User funds remain accessible for withdrawal. The shutdown follows EigenLayer developer Eigen Labs' recent 25% staff reduction to focus on EigenCloud, while a16z crypto invested $70M in EIGEN tokens to support the project. Inception had raised $3.5M in seed funding earlier this year.
