币界网报道:Spain's Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo has officially announced his candidacy to lead the Eurogroup, the influential body of eurozone finance ministers. In a statement released on Tuesday, Cuerpo emphasized his commitment to fostering economic stability and growth across the eurozone while addressing pressing challenges like inflation and digital transformation. The 45-year-old economist, who took office as Spain's economy chief in December 2023, highlighted his experience in both national and European economic policymaking. Current Eurogroup president Paschal Donohoe's term ends in December, with the election for his successor scheduled for early December. Cuerpo faces competition from Luxembourg's finance minister Yuriko Backes and potentially other candidates yet to declare. The Spanish government has thrown its full support behind Cuerpo's bid, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez praising his "technical expertise and European vision." If elected, Cuerpo would become the second Spaniard to lead the Eurogroup after Luis de Guindos (2013-2018), who now serves as ECB vice president. The Eurogroup presidency has gained significance in recent years as the body played crucial roles in coordinating pandemic recovery funds and responding to energy crises. Cuerpo's platform focuses on three priorities: maintaining fiscal sustainability, deepening capital markets union, and accelerating the digital euro project. The election comes at a sensitive time as the eurozone faces economic slowdown concerns and debates over reforming EU fiscal rules.
