Mehdi Farooq revealed that the attack began with a message on Telegram from Alex Lin, whom he knew. The two had interacted before, so this contact looked like routine. The latter shared the meeting link, and after joining the scheduled Zoom meeting, he found that there was no audio. Soon after running the update, his system was hacked, and the hacker "drained his savings for many years" in just a few minutes.
